Nasopharynx Cancer Treatment

What is Nasopharynx  Cancer Treatment?

The nasopharynx is located behind the nose just above the mouth and throat. The pharynx is a hollow tube about 5 inches long that starts behind the nose and goes down to the neck and ends at the top of the trachea (windpipe). Air and food pass through the pharynx on the way to the trachea or oesophagus (the tube that carries food to the stomach).  When the normal cells growth, divide and replace them in an orderly manner, the body relies on this orderly activity injuries and replace worn-out tissue. Then cancer develops when these cell divide too rapidly and grow without control.

There is several treatments for nasopharynx cancer such as surgery to remove the cancer, radiotherapy, chemotherapy to destroy the cancer cells. Several factors should be consider or account in order to choose the treatment includes location of the cancer, extent of the disease, any presence of cancer spread, how far is the spread, general health of the patient and age of the patient.

    • Radiation Therapy

The primary treatment for nasopharynx is radiation therapy. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells or to stop them from growing further. Usually, cancer cell are more sensitive to radiation damage than normal cell. Treatment to be made is in the area back of the throat or the lymph glands in the neck. Radiations have two types they are External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) and Internal Beam Radiotherapy.

    • External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT)

This treatment uses high-energy rays from the treatment machine directed to the area to be treated. It usually gives the treatment 5 days a week for 6 to 7.

    • Internal Beam Radiotherapy

This treatment also called Brachytherapy where a small radioactive material or tiny radioactive are placed directly into the cancer or very near it. It will be removed once the treatment is completed.

    • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer that using anti-cancer drugs. This treatment will destroy cancer cells while causing the least possible damage to the normal and stop cancer cells from growing and reproduce. Usually, this drug will given by injection.

    • Surgery

Surgery is the treatment to remove the cancer. Some people need to remove only a small area and healing is quick depending on the size of cancer. If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck, it will remove the nodes on one or both sides of the neck. This is called a neck dissection.
